Living with Pain Others Can’t See? Physical Therapy Can Help

— September 2026 —

Most people associate pain with obvious physical damage, such as a sprained ankle or a torn ACL. Even if the condition doesn’t show visible symptoms, like arthritis, the damage still shows up on imaging, “proving” that it’s real.

But what happens when pain doesn’t have any clear visual signs? Unfortunately, many people still hold on to the misconception that conditions like fibromyalgia or recurrent migraines aren’t “true” pain simply because they don’t cause any physical damage. And this misconception can do a lot of harm, making it much harder for people with these conditions to get the help they need.

At Therapy Fit Physical Therapy, we understand just how challenging invisible pain conditions can be. We also know that physical therapy offers several effective ways to manage symptoms, improve function, and get you back to your favorite activities.

Understanding Invisible Pain

Invisible pain refers to persistent pain that doesn’t stem from ongoing tissue damage or a recent injury. Instead, it develops when the nervous system becomes overly sensitive. As a result, the brain interprets ordinary sensations as pain signals.

There are several examples of invisible pain conditions, including:

  • Chronic musculoskeletal pain that persists well past the time tissue would have healed
  • Fibromyalgia, a condition that causes widespread pain, fatigue, and tenderness
  • Certain types of recurring migraines and headaches

Invisible pain doesn’t act like ordinary pain. In some cases, like with fibromyalgia, it will seem to move around the body. It can also cause additional symptoms, including fatigue, trouble concentrating, or difficulty sleeping.

Furthermore, many people will become anxious about their symptoms and avoid movement out of fear of making it worse. However, this creates a cycle in which reduced physical activity leads to deconditioning in the muscles and joints, which only worsens pain symptoms. Addressing invisible pain, then, often means breaking this cycle.

Calming the Nervous System with Physical Therapy

Treatment for invisible pain focuses on improving how the body and nervous system work together. At Therapy Fit Physical Therapy, we begin by conducting a thorough evaluation to better understand your symptoms, daily challenges, and personal goals. This gives us the information we need to create a customized plan.

Why Personalized Care Makes a Difference

Invisible pain affects everyone differently. Even if you have the same diagnosis as someone else, you may still have completely different symptoms, activity levels, and goals.

This is why individualized care is so important when treating these kinds of conditions. At Therapy Fit Physical Therapy, you will work one-on-one with a physical therapist who will take the time to understand your concerns, monitor your progress, and adjust your treatment program accordingly.

Effective Treatment Techniques for Invisible Pain

Hands-On Treatment

  • Manual therapy can help reduce muscle tension, improve joint mobility, and prepare your body for more active treatment.

Progressive Exercise

  • Gradual, individualized movement is the foundation for managing invisible pain, as it helps reduce pain sensitivity while improving strength, endurance, and confidence. We’ll introduce exercise gradually to avoid aggravating your symptoms, and over time, your body will begin to tolerate more activity.

Movement Retraining

  • Sometimes pain changes the way we move. We’ll identify movement patterns that place unnecessary stress on the body and teach more efficient ways to perform everyday activities.

Activity Pacing

  • Many people with invisible pain alternate between doing too much on good days and needing extra recovery afterward. Activity pacing helps spread physical activity throughout the day, making symptoms more manageable.

Pain Education

  • We want you to understand why your pain occurs, which will help you take a more active role in your treatment. We’ll explain how the nervous system contributes to your symptoms and provide strategies to manage them, including breathing exercises, relaxation techniques, and more.

You Don’t Have to Face Invisible Pain Alone

We know how frustrating it can be when others dismiss your pain simply because imaging couldn’t find anything wrong. We’re here to assure you that your pain is real and effective treatment is available.

If chronic pain, migraines, or other persistent symptoms are limiting your life, the team at Therapy Fit Physical Therapy is here to help. Through personalized, one-on-one care and evidence-informed treatment, we can help you move more comfortably, participate in the activities you enjoy, and take meaningful steps toward feeling like yourself again.

“I had a great experience at Therapy Fit. My physical therapist, Mansi, did an excellent job helping me with my back problems. She was wonderful—very attentive and thoughtful in her approach. The exercises she recommended made a real difference in my back pain and significantly improved my posture.
On top of that, Therapy Fit is a tremendous value. Each session typically includes massage, mobilization treatment, and exercises, which made the care feel very thorough and effective. I highly recommend both Mansi and Therapy Fit.”

How Physical Therapy Can Help You Alleviate Chronic Pain

Have you been living with chronic pain? Are you willing to do what it takes to feel good again?

At Therapy Fit Physical Therapy, our physical therapists use the most advanced strategies to help you manage your pain and, for some, eliminate it altogether!

September is Pain Awareness Month, and in honor of this, Therapy Fit Physical Therapy would like to provide you with some vital information regarding the origins of pain and how physical therapy can help manage and alleviate it.

Pain is very complex. Gone are the days when ignoring or pushing through your pain was the best solution. Fortunately, our team understands the complexity of pain and, more importantly, how to alleviate it once and for all! Pain happens for several reasons and manifests in different ways.

Understanding the source of your pain is one of the first steps to combat it and prevent it from returning in the future. Our clinic specializes in treating people from all backgrounds and experiences with pain. We are trained professionals who will have you feeling your best in no time at all.

If you’re experiencing discomfort or have noticed that your ability to do your usual activities has dwindled, it’s time to call in our team of physical therapists from Therapy Fit Physical Therapy.

Understanding The Source Of Your Pain

How long you’ve been experiencing pain, where it developed, and how it manifests are significant distinctions that can help shed some light on what may be causing your condition. It is also essential to understand that the intensity of your pain is not always the more reliable characteristic for finding relief.

Too often, people focus only on the intensity of their pain which is influenced by stress levels and societal or familial beliefs. The location and duration of pain are effective, reliable ways to manage and alleviate your pain once and for all.

When you meet with a Therapy Fit Physical Therapy physical therapist, you’ll have a conversation about your pain to determine how it started, when it began, where it began and how it behaves (i.e., what makes it better or worse).

There are also some things to consider before heading into physical therapy:

  • Try to remember or identify precisely where the pain occurs in your body. Pain that is localized can be easier to identify the possible tissue that is causing it. When pain is more diffuse, it can be trickier to figure out what is causing it.
  • Consider how the pain feels. Is it a steady ache or sharp and intermittent? Is it more of a tingling or prickly feeling? Each sensation is associated with different types of problems, so describing your pain appropriately may help determine the best treatment methods for your body’s needs.
  • Does it get worse with activity or inactivity? For some people, there are specific movements that cause pain. For others, the issue is due to the quantity of accumulation of activity and not a specific event. One of the most common misunderstandings is that pain needs something to worsen, but in reality, many people get worse from a prolonged position or improper posture.

No matter what, our physical therapists can help! We are experts at weeding through the possibilities and clarifying what is causing the pain. Our goal is to help you resolve it once and for all!

What Is Chronic Pain?

Our bodies sustain injuries and experience pain no matter how careful we are. Too often, people wait too long to seek help, which can make the situation more complicated and lead to chronic pain. Chronic pain is pain that persists past normal healing time and lasts or recurs for more than 3 to 6 months.

Although most people think of chronic pain as a continuous problem, most of the time, it is cyclic in nature. Typically an individual will have an episode of pain that gets better only to be followed by a recurrence, followed by yet another recurrence.

As time goes on, the frequency and duration of the pain get longer, whereas the periods where it is less problematic grow shorter.

Seeking help from the physical therapists at Therapy Fit Physical Therapy can make all the difference. Identifying the underlying cause of your pain and figuring out the possible triggering events can lead to a reversal of the condition and eventual relief.

How Physical Therapy Can Help

Physical therapists are trained in identifying and treating the cause of your pain. This allows you to shift away from using pain medication and instead find relief with strategies that include manual therapy, stretching, muscle building, and cognitive behavioral therapy.

Considering any changes in your daily habits or environmental factors can be very helpful in determining what is causing your pain. Our therapists will work with you to identify solutions that fit your lifestyle and offer lasting results. The combination of physical therapy with psychological approaches has been shown to be the most effective way to improve physical function and resolve chronic pain struggles.

Our clinic uses several manual therapy techniques that focus on the areas you’re experiencing pain or movement restrictions. When the reason for your pain is determined, we assist you through movement to regain optimal function in each joint, muscle, or other tissue causing the pain.

Our physical therapists are as dedicated as you are and will encourage you to achieve all the goals you outlined in the beginning!

Easy Yogurt & Spice Roasted Salmon

This effortless recipe uses a simple spiced yogurt marinade to keep the salmon perfectly tender and moist while roasting. The combination of turmeric, cumin, and coriander delivers a punch of vibrant Persian-inspired flavors in under 30 minutes, making it an ideal centerpiece for any weeknight dinner.

INGREDIENTS:

  • 1 large side of salmon (about 2 lbs) or 4 individual fillets
  • ½ cup plain Greek yogurt
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 large garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon ground coriander
  • ½ teaspoon ground turmeric
  • ½ teaspoon paprika (or red pepper flakes for heat)
  • 1 teaspoon sea salt
  • Freshly ground black pepper, to taste
  • Lemon wedges, for serving
  • Fresh cilantro or dill, roughly chopped, for garnish

INSTRUCTIONS:

Step 1: Preheat & Prep. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a large rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper or foil, and set aside.

Step 2: Make the Marinade. In a small mixing bowl, combine the Greek yogurt, olive oil, minced garlic, cumin, coriander, turmeric, paprika, sea salt, and a few generous grinds of black pepper. Stir until the mixture is completely smooth and well blended.

Step 3: Coat the Salmon. Place the salmon on the prepared baking sheet, skin-side down. Using a spoon or a pastry brush, spread the spiced yogurt mixture evenly over the top and sides of the salmon until it is fully coated.

Step 4: Roast & Serve. Roast in the preheated oven for 12 to 15 minutes, or until the salmon is just cooked through and flakes easily with a fork. (Cooking time will vary depending on the thickness of your fish). Remove from the oven, garnish with fresh herbs, and serve immediately with lemon wedges.
