Perimenopause: The Road to Change

Most of us are familiar with menopause, officially defined as the point at which a woman has not had her period for over a year. Fewer of us realize that the transition into menopause is gradual, taking as long as a decade. During this period, our bodies prepare for menopause and old age, leading to several side effects:

  • Irregular periods
  • Achy joints
  • Decreased muscle mass
  • Pelvic pain and dysfunction, including incontinence
  • Vaginal dryness and sexual dysfunction
  • Mood changes

And, of course, menopause itself brings about bodily changes, including an increased risk of heart disease and decreased bone density, which can lead to osteoporosis. Perimenopause is a great time to get ahead of those changes!

How Our Perimenopausal Program Can Help

At Therapy Fit, we offer a comprehensive perimenopausal program that addresses the many unique symptoms associated with the transition–all tailored to your specific experience. Here are just a few of the approaches we include in our program:

  • A customized aerobic exercise plan to improve cardiovascular health and manage emotional changes
  • Strength training to build muscle mass and improve bone health
  • Pelvic floor physical therapy, including pelvic strengthening exercises, to address pelvic concerns like incontinence or sexual dysfunction
  • Manual therapy techniques, such as joint mobilizations to the sacroiliac joint, coccyx, or pubic symphysis, to help with aches or other pain
  • Education about your body’s changes and what to expect from menopause and beyond

For many women, perimenopause can feel like a second puberty–but with much less guidance! Our perimenopausal program can serve as that guidance while helping you manage your symptoms and develop habits for good health in the second half of your life.
