Unlocking the Power of Craniosacral Therapy

July 2025

We recently worked with a patient who had been dealing with months of persistent headaches and lingering neck pain that left her unable to get a good night’s sleep. She had tried everything: pain medication, prescribed stretches, a heating pad. Nothing worked. Then a friend recommended craniosacral therapy.

That’s how this patient ended up working with the Therapy Fit team. Although initially skeptical, she began to experience the results within a few weeks. Her neck pain resolved, her headaches became less frequent, and she felt more relaxed than she had in a while.

This story isn’t uncommon. Unfortunately, many patients are unfamiliar with craniosacral therapy and its many unique benefits – but we want to change that today!

Craniosacral therapy is a gentle, hands-on technique that targets this system to help improve fluid circulation. We use a light touch – usually no more than the weight of a nickel – to release tension in this area. This approach can calm the nervous system, ease discomfort, and support healing in areas that traditional treatments might miss.

• Reduces stress and anxiety

• Improves sleep quality

• Relieves chronic pain

• Decreases tension headaches and migraines

• Supports recovery after injury

• Enhances overall body function

Because craniosacral therapy is much more gentle than high-pressure methods like deep tissue massage, it’s ideal for people sensitive to touch or recovering from injury. We also like to recommend it to anyone managing a chronic condition, recovering from injury, or experiencing nervous system dysfunction.

We often incorporate craniosacral therapy into treatment for conditions like:

  • Headaches and migraines
  • Neck and back pain
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Jaw pain and dysfunction
  • Post-concussion symptoms
  • Neurological conditions (like stroke)
  • Infant conditions such as colic or tongue-tie recovery support

Many patients find that craniosacral therapy fills the gap when other treatments haven’t worked.

Craniosacral therapy sessions are calm and quiet. You’ll lie fully clothed on a treatment table while one of our PTs uses light pressure on specific points in the head, neck, or spine. These touches are so subtle that some patients don’t even feel movement.

The technique is not painful, and most patients report that their sessions are meditative and deeply calming. It’s not uncommon for people to feel sleepy afterward, either!

Sessions usually last 45 to 60 minutes. Many people report immediate relief, while others notice a gradual improvement over several sessions.

At Therapy Fit, we typically incorporate craniosacral therapy into a comprehensive care program that supports recovery and improves your daily function. Craniosacral therapy works well alongside traditional physical therapy techniques, including therapeutic exercise, postural training, and myofascial release.

In fact, because it supports the nervous system and soft tissue mobility, craniosacral therapy can help other treatments work more effectively. That said, our team will always work closely with you to develop a program suited to your unique needs, abilities, and pain levels.

Here are some situations where we tend to incorporate craniosacral therapy into a treatment program, although it’s by no means an exhaustive list:

• You have chronic pain that hasn’t responded to other therapies

• You’re recovering from a head or neck injury

• You’re experiencing stress-related tension or sleep issues

• You need a gentler treatment option for any reason

“The doctor is very experienced, kind and diagnosed me thoroughly. I have had unexplained chronic pain for 2 years and felt immense relief in 1 month after coming here! Ms Mosumi is a wonderful physical therapist, she helps focus on healing, strengthening muscles and improving overall health. Consistent physical therapy is helping me so much! Thank you!”

A Closer Look at the Conditions Treated With This Approach

  • Headaches can develop for many reasons, including tension in the neck, shoulders, or cranial membranes. Craniosacral therapy helps release pressure in these areas, reducing frequency and severity over time.
  • Jaw pain stems from problems with the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), the two joints that connect the lower jaw to the skull. These problems can cause pain and clicking and affect chewing ability. However, craniosacral therapy can ease tension in the jaw and surrounding muscles, helping restore natural movement and decrease discomfort.
  •  This chronic condition involves widespread muscle pain, fatigue, and heightened sensitivity to discomfort. Gentle craniosacral work can calm the nervous system, reduce stress, and support better sleep.
  • Even mild head injuries can affect balance, mood, and focus. Craniosacral therapy supports the body’s natural healing response by improving the circulation of cerebrospinal fluid and reducing residual tension in the head and neck.
  • Ongoing tension or past injury can disrupt how the spine and surrounding tissues move. This therapy addresses restrictions in soft tissue and helps improve alignment and comfort.

The Therapy Fit team is here to help you manage ongoing pain and discomfort, no matter the reason. We’ll evaluate your symptoms and let you know if craniosacral therapy is right for you.

Stand or sit with arms relaxed at your sides. Lift your shoulders up toward your ears, squeeze briefly, then relax them back down. Repeat to strengthen and relax the upper trapezius muscles.

Looking for a fun and flavorful way to liven up your dinner routine? Try this creative take on oven-baked chicken! Instead of traditional breading, crispy French-fried onions add a satisfying crunch and savory flavor. Simply coat skinless, boneless chicken breasts in beaten egg, press into crushed onions, and bake to golden perfection — no frying required.

Ingredients

  • 1 ⅓ cups French-fried onions, crushed
  • 1 large egg, beaten
  • 1 pound skinless, boneless chicken breast halves

Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C). Spread crushed onions in a shallow bowl. Pour egg into a separate shallow bowl. Dip chicken into beaten egg, then press into crushed onions. Gently tap chicken to let loose pieces fall away. Place breaded chicken on a baking sheet. Bake chicken until no longer pink in the center and the juices run clear, about 20 minutes. An instant-read thermometer inserted into the center should read at least 165 degrees. Serve and enjoy!
